Oh, what could (and should) have been

Ugh.

Even as I sit back and enjoy the year’s greatest day of televised sports, I can’t help but be reminded of the one thing missing from my NCAA Tournament experience: Notre Dame.

Well, I guess you could say the Irish are a part of today’s festivities. But I don’t think a second-round NIT game against New Mexico is what anyone had in mind for Mike Brey’s bunch on the Big Dance’s opening day.

I almost wish Notre Dame wasn’t playing at all, because with every meaningless NIT victory, the Irish just remind all of us that they had plenty on that roster to at least make the field of 65. But by season’s end, Notre Dame wasn’t even on the bubble.

As frustrating to watch as the Irish were all season, you can’t tell me that a team with the dominance of Luke Harangody, the sharpshooting of Kyle McAlarney and Ryan Ayers, and the scrappiness of Tory Jackson shouldn’t have been right there come tournament time.

But hey, I guess we can enjoy the NIT, right?
